Hiring agency workers or freelancers (self-employed)?

If you're short on staff in your company, you want that problem solved quickly. Nowadays, however, there are different ways to hire people, for example through a freelance (self-employed) setup or via agency workers. One option is not the same as the other; it depends on what the job requires. In this article, we help you map out the differences.

The freelancer: Focus on the assignment and experience

A freelancer is usually hired for a specific task or project that needs to be completed. A key characteristic of freelancers is their entrepreneurship: they work at their own risk and expense and are therefore focused on completing an assignment fully.

In practice, you can see this entrepreneurial mindset. Freelancers arrange their own transport and personal protective equipment. Because they have worked for many different companies, they bring broad experience to your workplace. They have often completed similar assignments before, so they quickly understand what needs to be done. We ensure that the contracts surrounding this collaboration are legally sound, so that agreements are clear for both parties.

The agency worker: Stability and integration

An agency worker is a good option if you're looking for someone who will become part of your existing team. While a freelancer often moves from project to project, an agency worker is more likely to seek a certain level of stability. This means they are more willing to commit to a company for a longer period and take part in daily operations.

In this setup, the agency is the legal employer. We handle payroll, insurance, and full administration. You manage the daily work on-site and decide how tasks are carried out, without bearing the responsibilities of formal employment. This provides peace of mind, especially for ongoing work or when you need extra support in regular operations.

Right balance

Many companies use a combination of both. The choice depends on the nature of the work:

  • Looking for an independent expert with their own transport and broad experience to complete a specific project? Then a freelance setup is the right fit.
  • Looking for someone long-term who seeks stability and fully integrates into your team? Then an agency worker is the better option.

By assessing what the job really requires, you ensure your team keeps performing at full capacity. We’re happy to help you determine which option best suits your current situation.
